"A day painting in the field is a breath of fresh air." For me, nothing refreshes my spirit as quickly as a few hours outside. Quiet observation of nearly any scene, lets me learn about a place and the people that frequent it. Designing a painting begins with what I know based on my observations. Then comes the challenge of how to use paint and paper or canvas to communicate to someone else the beauty of my surroundings and life, or an idea, a design, an event, and making it special for them and for me. Although I do occasionally paint in my studio, the watercolor paintings below were done on location 'en plein air.'

Florals and Still Life Subjects
These florals and still life paintings were all done from life. I do enjoy sketching and keep several sketchbooks going. Sometimes it's fun to design the white spaces, or lay donw a flood of color on a very wet paper and see what happens, then go back and paint. It's another way way to play with the paint!

Sketchbooks
People have asked me about my sketchbooks. So, I'm putting together some pages that will show sketches from Maine and Connecticut, Canada, Scotland, France and Spain. I've made notes on some of the pages, and some of the sketches helped me work out the composition or color, and I went right to work on a final painting. It's fun to compare, and it's more fun (at least for me) to go back and reminisce about the places I've traveled to. Not every painting is a success! Please stop by again and take a look.
